Bridging dry drills with on-snow skills

By Paul Lorenz

I was excited to attend the Hungarian on-snow workshop which focused on bridging dry drills with on-snow skills. The clinic commenced with stationary warm up exercises to engage various muscles groups with particular focus on the kinetic chain. This shifted to exercises for hip mobility and angulation in snowplough turns.

Once the hip position was established the clinic moved onto Javelin Turns incorporating hip position in faster moving skiing. The focus then shifted to rhythm of turn and release of energy in pure carved medium and short turns.

I enjoyed listening to the presenters and feel that the Hungarian technical approach is very similar to the APSI approach. The Hungarian emphasis on hip position to assist with edging and balance over the outside ski while maintaining a neutral position of the spine was very interesting and complemented the APSI philosophy.

I recorded the entire on-snow workshop on video and you can view it below.
