ALPINE LEVEL 3

The Alpine Level 3 qualification is designed for experienced instructors looking to refine their technical understanding, develop their teaching, and confidently deliver both group and private lessons to intermediate and advanced skiers across varied terrain and conditions.

On successful completion, candidates are qualified to teach up to carving, short turns, basic terrain park and an introduction to moguls. 

There is one five-day course which must be completed prior to attending the exam, along with the accrual of 100 hours of professional instructing and 25 hours of in-house training with an APSI Approved Snowsports School. 
 

COURSE

The five-day course focuses on improving candidates’ own skiing, demonstrations, and teaching. It covers the skills needed to teach intermediate skiers from pole plant to carved medium turns, as well as how to introduce guests to situational skiing.

COURSE PREREQUISITES

• Be a current APSI member (Membership is packaged with every event purchase and removed if you hold a current membership).
• Have access to the current APSI Teaching Manual (digital access is included with Membership).
• Be currently employed by an APSI Approved Snowsports School. 
  
• Have passed all units of the Alpine Level 2 Exam or have been approved in accordance with the Recognition of Prior Learning Program. 
• Have a minimum of one full-time seasons of instructing experience prior to commencing the Level 3 program. 

EXAM

The Alpine Level 3 Exam is conducted over two days and uses a combination of station-based assessments for skiing and demonstrations, group scenario assessments for teaching and indoor theory assessments.

Candidates must pass all components to achieve the APSI Alpine Level 3 Certification. The components assessed during the examination process include: 

• Level 3 Freeskiing
• Level 3 Demonstrations
• Level 3 Teaching
• Level 3 Movement Analysis
• Level 3 Theory (operated separately) 

For all station assessments, candidates complete the task twice, and the best mark of the two is recorded.

The theory exam is held in-house within your Snowsports School with the date communicated by your Training Manager. 

There is typically one early season exam in July (rotating between resorts) and end of season exams in September in NSW and VIC. Participation in multiple end of season exams within the same season is not permitted.

EXAM PREREQUISITES

• Have completed the Alpine Level 3 Course 
• Have a minimum of 100 hours teaching experience with a professional snowsports school
• Have completed a minimum of 25 hours of in-house training with an APSI Approved Snowsports School (in addition to the course) 
• Be currently employed by an APSI Approved Snowsports School. 

UNSUCCESSFUL EXAM COMPONENTS 

If a candidate is unsuccessful in one or more components of the exam, they may resit those components at a future exam, subject to resit fees. 
All successfully completed components are retained. These remain valid for up to three years, and may be extended if the candidate attends a relevant APSI course to maintain their pass status. 

REGISTRATIONS FOR ALL EVENTS CLOSE 7 DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT STARTS. If places are still available within 7 days of commencement, you may be able to book by contacting the APSI office. A late booking fee of 10% of the event fee will apply. 

SNOWBOARD LEVEL 3

Our snowboard level three qualification is aimed at the intermediate class and private lesson instructor.

This qualification is suitable for experienced, working, level two certified instructors who would like to teach more advanced progressions.

COURSE

The five-day course covers the skills needed to teach intermediate riders strategies for refined turns through to the introduction of freestyle and situational riding.

The course covers topics such as; class handling, safety, technical information, rider analysis, riding and demonstrating ability all based around the performance of steering and carving as used in the Australian teaching system.

COURSE PREREQUISITES

• Be a current member
• Be employed by a professional snowsports school in Australia or abroad
• Passed all units of the snowboard level two exam (or have been approved for RPL)
• Have a minimum of one full-time season of instructing experience

EXAM

The three-day exam utilises both the station assessment type for riding and demonstration tasks and the group scenario assessment type for teaching tasks. 

There is one National exam that operates in September and rotates between the resorts. Please check the APSI Course & Event Calendar for the date and location.

EXAM PREREQUISITES

• Have completed all units of the snowboard level three course
• Be employed by a professional snowsports school in Australia or abroad
• Have a minimum of 100 hours teaching experience
• Have completed a minimum of 25 hours of in-house training with an APSI approved snowsport school (in addition to the course)

TELEMARK LEVEL 3

Our telemark level three qualification is aimed at those wishing to teach more advanced telemark progressions.

This qualification is suitable for experienced, level two certified instructors who would like to teach more advanced progressions.

COURSE

The five-day course covers the skills needed to teach intermediate telemark skiers from intermediate up to advanced telemark turns and how to introduce guests to situational skiing.

The course covers topics such as; class handling, safety, technical information, skier analysis, skiing and demonstrating ability all based around the performance of steering and carving as used in the Australian teaching system.

COURSE PREREQUISITIES

• Be a current member

• Own the current teaching manual

• Passed all units of the telemark level two exam (or have been approved for RPL)

EXAM

The one-day exam utilises both the station assessment type for skiing and demonstration tasks and the group scenario assessment type for teaching tasks. The theory paper is delivered in the week preceding the on-snow exam.

EXAM PREREQUISITES

• Have completed all units of the telemark level three course

NORDIC LEVEL 3

Our nordic level three qualification is aimed at those wishing to teach more advanced nordic progressions.

This qualification is suitable for experienced, level two certified instructors who would like to teach intermediate to advanced nordic lessons and includes an introduction to biathlon, alpine turns and telemark technique.

COURSE

The four-day course covers the skills needed to teach nordic skiers from intermediate up to marathon and race skating.

The course covers topics such as; class handling, safety, technical information, skier analysis, skiing and demonstrating ability.

COURSE PREREQUISITES

• Be a current member

• Own the current teaching manual

• Passed all units of the nordic level two exam (or have been approved for RPL)

The one-day exam utilises both the station assessment type for skiing and demonstration tasks and the group scenario assessment type for teaching tasks.
