'Ordinary' Member of the APSI Board

Are you currently a snowsports instructor, or have you been one in the past? If yes, how long have you been instructing, over what time period and where?
This is my first season in a long time where I haven't worked in the snowsports industry. I currently hold APSI Level 4 Alpine Instructor certification and over the past 27 years I have taught and coached in Thredbo as well as in the USA and Canada.

What is your favourite part about being involved in the snowsports industry?
The snowsports industry around the world has always been such an amazing and welcoming community. Everyone comes with their own background and skills that they are willing to share. You can arrive in a resort you have never been to before and within a week you have a group of friends.

How long have you been involved with the APSI and what inspired you to join the Board?
I have been a proud member of APSI since 1998 and have completed most of my certification with the APSI. I was part of the Australian Delegation to Interski in Levi, Finland in 2023 and saw the professionalism and respect for the APSI on the international stage. This is my first year out of ski boots and thought it would be a good time to give back to the APSI.

What is your professional background outside of snowsports (if any)?
Parallel to my snowsports work, I have served as a professional firefighter since 2002 with Fire and Rescue NSW. Currently as a Leading Station Officer and Acting Inspector, I’ve led teams in high-pressure environments and have been deployed extensively across NSW, interstate and internationally as part of Incident Management Teams. I hold a Degree in Engineering and I have owned and ran my own business for over ten years.

What is one thing you think members might not know about what the Board or APSI does?
How well the APSI instructors are respected around the world. Whilst at Interski I got to ski a day with a lot of the older Swiss and Austrian ex demo team members. Getting a compliment out of these guys is a challenge. Near the end of the day one of them said to me. I watched your demo team last night. You Aussies don't ski too bad!

What is one thing you hope to contribute or achieve during your time on the Board?
I have actively contributed to various management committees and working groups in Emergency Management and Planning, where I’ve helped shape policy and lead multi-agency collaborations. I hope to bring these skills to table and work to shape the next steps in the APSI future.

Is there anything else you would like to add or share with the APSI membership?
I'm sure I'm not the only one who the APSI has helped shape their life. My wife and I met on a APSI Level 2 course in 1998! 2 awesome kids and 22 years later still going strong.
